The curse of Comic Sans

The diMio Pizza sign, which uses the Comic Sans font

A few days ago, I promised a site dedicated to Comic Sans and its widespread abuse. I had just begun a design project in which I was to capture every usage of Comic Sans that I could find, to see (and eventually show) what kind of demon has been unleashed on the visual arts.

Little did I know. Today, I found no less than five manifestations of the Evil Font, and captured four of them. It’s more serious than I thought. This isn’t just a bunch of people with design issues. This is an epidemic.

In that same vein, I’ve noticed that Verdana is really heavily used, both in print and on television. I’m not nearly as affected by Verdana, because all in all, it’s pretty decent for a bundled font. But I am noticing that, especially on print signs, fonts that are included in Windows are usually a signal that an amateur designed something. Does that make me a snob yet?

(Oh, and someone in the Boston area, mail me a pic of the sign that’s on some of the Red Line trains that reads “Depressed?”. I know I am.)
