Staccato 5

Filed in: culture, music, projects, Fri, Dec 31 2004 12:20 PT

Staccato episode 5 is now online. This is my first episode recorded live, so there are some rough edges (and quite honestly, recording the entire show in one shot, including DJ segments, actually scared me more than speaking in front of a large crowd), but the final production is in my opinion the best set so far. Expect interviews, an updated site, and more in 2005.

Also, a plea:

This show features a track, “Dar”, which talks about the Indian Ocean. In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, ten people are reported killed by the tsunami that struck last week. This was thousands of miles away from the epicenter. The scope of this tragedy is almost unfathomable. We ask that you please donate to the tsunami relief effort.

So, uh…. Is there a way to get ahold of some of this nifty music from your podcasts in individual mp3s? ;)

  2. Matt May Says:

Yup. I’m working on it. I’ll have a table of tracks and artists up shortly.

How about just a link reference to where you originally got the track? That way we could get it ourselves and save you the effort and storage space. (Or, using Peak or any other digital editor, open up the podcast file and extract the tracks - which is what I did for Staccato 4.)

  4. Matt May Says:

Oh, no. I wouldn’t recommend doing that. As I said in the first episode, the idea was to make the music easy to get, so I’d rather point everybody to the originals. It’s usually available at twice the bitrate of Staccato.

I will redouble my efforts to put out pointers to original tracks and their albums. I’ll probably also add a separate feed for tracks only.

(Don’t worry about bandwidth, by the way. Most of the load is being borne by the Internet Archive…)

Matt, you were right about the lo-fi track. It definitely works. This seems to be true of other music containing more percussive attacks and lots of staccato when sampled at low bitrates. The minimalist sound palette and repetitiveness combined with the narrow bandwidth really give it a great feel.

Congrats on #5! It’s sounding more polished each time.

Hi Matt, thanks for including direct links to the tracks and the providers/artists. Very cool. I work over at ComfortStand.com, and it is always a blast to find other folks who dig what we are doing! Keep up the good work. I am adding you to the NEW SOUND NETWORK, the OddioOverplay.com directory of fellow sites focusing on free and legal online music.

wow… I was trying to contact you about some work thing, and somebody pointed me to your “I’m at the CC party ” item, and then I found this staccato thing. Definitely a ShareLifeThruArt moment. This stuff is all so cool… WordPress, trackback, blogs, CC… the days of artists signing away their rights to get wide distribution are definitely numbered.

What is podcasting, anyway? How is it different from “internet radio”? More “view source” links, please.
